March 30 was fly-in day and we had snowy weather so only did a brief tour, going towards Friendship Col and across to where we could drop into the tree skiing just down Swan Creek from the hut. March 31 it continued to snow and we tree skied all day. Conditions were excellent but accessible terrain was limited.
On April 1 it dawned clear and, as it turned out, cold as well. Being April with a load of new snow I fully anticipated abundant avalanche activity, especially on the South facing slope of Cycle. But we were fortunate and the temperatures remained cold enough to keep the snow in place. On April 1 we made a short tour which stuck to conservative terrain angles while we got a feel for the conditions. We went up the Granite Glacier into the basin below Pioneer Pass. |
