I had planned to climb Mt Washington but it was closed off due to a fire in the late summer and the remaining hazards. So I did Three Fingered Jack instead. These are both done from Santiam Pass west of Bend then Sisters. At one time the Oregon Mountaineering Association used to do both in a weekend, one each day. In the past I have sometimes done Mt Washington in late fall and hauled a bunch of unnecessary webbing and hardware off the mountain. I did not expect 3fj to be a clean-up trip but ended up bringing back 5+ pounds of webbing. Much of it was old and weathered, none of it was ever necessary to begin with.
It seemed I was the only one on the mountain, much to my surprise for such a nice fall day. There were a few hikers and hunters on the PCT but nobody else once I left the approach trail.
